Tests to Assess the Fallopian Tubes & Uterus

Hysterosalpingo Contrast Sonography

  • Additional method for tubal assessment.
  • An office procedure.
  • Perform a vaginal scan. Put a balloon catheter in the cervix. Echovist (2-5ml) is injected. If flow is seen through the length of the tube, it is potent.
  • Requires skilled Sonologist.

Some patients are uncomfortable with instillation of fluid (saline can also be used).

  • Outpatient procedure.
  • Unimpaired passage of dye through the length of the tube is suggestive of normal anatomy.
  • Impaired flow is suggestive of peritubal adhesions or block.
  • Hydrosalpinx is indicative of severe tubal damage.

These tests help to assess the uterine cavity, to rule out any space occupying space occupying lesions like fibroids or polyp and it confirms the potency of tubes.
